This month we celebrate International Women's Day. To celebrate the fact that this day is the day my site was conceived, I would like to chat about some of my favourite women in music who inspire me.
Rachel K Collier
I first came across her on YouTube, shortly after I discovered her music performance videos (Ships to be precise) it was announced that she would be coming to perform and give a talk to us Music Tech students. When I watched her performance I was instantly hooked and decided to really get my head down in my Ableton classes!
I went to see her in Manchester a couple of years later and had a great time, she puts on an epic live show and I'm looking forward to going to see her again if the opportunity arises. I am currently part of her patreon community and am looking forward to her listening party later this month.
Dinosaur is one of my favourite songs of hers, it perfectly depicts the frustrations of being a female in this male dominated industry. Having many experiences similar to the ones she sings about, it truly resonates. Plus the video is incredible, who doesn't want to see girls smashing up a studio?
KARRA
A vocalist and boss babe who's journey I've been following for a while. I first discovered KARRA when I was working on my final major project at uni, when I was doing market research on sampling. KARRA has one of the best selling vocal sample packs on Splice, she does in-depth and informative gear reviews and music production tutorials on her YouTube channel. It's amazing to see how much she's grown and achieved over the last 5 years.
KARRA is known for her creative visuals and immaculate video production. I've watched her style get cleaner and cleaner and I'm really looking forward to seeing where this takes her next. She recently did a documentary talking about how Spotify deleted her album, sparking a conversation about the way we share, consume and distribute music.
Roxxane Emmery (RORY)
I discovered her ADHD Love content on a random scroll, which resonated with me, being a late diagnosed ASD/ADHDer myself. I watched her content blow up and later was ecstatic to discover she makes rock music and is an incredible songwriter and vocalist! We saw her at Download in 2024 and I hope to see her on the MAIN STAGE this year (that's if I can get hold of some tickets!). I'm so happy she is living her dreams and I love following her journey because it reminds me of what is possible if we put our minds to it, even as a late diagnosed woman. Rock on RORY!
Hanna Rose Collins (Scene Queen)
Download 2024 was when I was first introduced to the Scene Queen band. Their performance blew me away. It was great how much she pissed the men off in the crowd just by being the diva she is. Hannah's stage presence was enigmatic to most of the men surrounding me, but I got it, wholeheartedly. Happily bopped along while she fully took up the stage. She knows exactly who she is and what she came to do. Fan for life!
